Cowboy Revolver Work

Colt Open-Top and cartridge conversion revolver shooters; I have a simple, rugged tool to ease the job of barrel removal! The WEDGIE!

Cowpoke Action Details: All jobs are carefully examined before any work is performed to determine the the revolver's true mechanical condition by using the same troubleshooting procedures I outline in Gunsmithing Guns of the Old West.
Check cylinder rotational axis, alignment, timing, indexing, headspace and barrel to cylinder gap.
(If we find problems in this area of your revolver we will notify you of any additional charges required to correct it before proceeding.)
Debur internal surfaces of frame everywhere contact is made with moving parts.
Debur, stone to correct contours and polish all internal moving parts to a bright finish in order to reduce friction and provide a smooth action operation with 3½-4 Lbs trigger pull.
Lighten up loading gate tension.
Set cylinder timing, standard factory settings.
Debur, lighten and polish springs.
Test fire with factory ammo (ammunition costs are additional).
Wrangler Action

. . .for mounted shooting events

Details: Everything in the Cowpoke action job plus. . .
Mainspring is kept at nearly full tension.
A safer, hand-honed 5-6 pound, crisp trigger for mounted shooting.
Sharpen hammer checkering with diamond files for a a better thumb-grip.
Some-Slick Action Details: Includes everything the Cowboke action job does and. . .
Install new Smith Enterprise hand and set cylinder timing to precision settings and adjust placement of chambers at ½ cock.
Debur ejector rod and spring for smoother operation.
Install and fit custom aftermarket mainspring, trigger&bolt spring and handspring with reduced tension and smoother operation.
Hand-hone cylinder chambers for smoother loading and unloading.
Set trigger pull to 2-2½ Lbs.
Machine forcing cone to proper depth and cut 11 degrees.
Smokepole action
Details: For percussion revolvers. Includes everything the Cowpoke action job does (except gate) and. . .
Adjust nipples so they are all the same distance from the rear of the cylinder.
Ream chambers to match groove diameter. (If needed and where possible)
Cut 11 degree forcing cone in barrel.
Chamfer rear edge of rammer to prevent damage to chamber mouths.
Test fire with black powder, final clean-up.

As of August 2005, the turn-around time for standard work is running about 1-3 months

Gunsmithing Prices

Please note: All prices reflect normal gunsmithing procedures performed on firearms that require no new parts and needing no additional repairs in order to make them functional, safe or to perform as the owner has requested. Ammunition for test firing is not included in these prices. In the course of our troubleshooting examination or during repair, should we discover any problem requiring additional labor, parts or both, we will notify the owner of any costs involved and obtain authorization first before performing said work.

Parts: We use original Uberti, Pietta, Colt or Peacemaker Specialist replacement parts except we that use only bolts and hands made by Smith Enterprise as replacement parts for all Colts and Colt clones.

Other Revolver Work

This list is by no means complete but here are a few of the more popular types of repair jobs, the cost of parts is not included.

Ruger or Uberti Schofield hammer: Re-contour spur to a pleasing 19th century shape and hand checker in 24 LPI, hand polish, nitre blue $115. or finish in color case harden $150.
Replace and hand fit the hand & handpring, completely re-time the revolver $100.
Replace and hand fit "early" or faulty bolt and completely re-index the revolver $125.
Re-barrel or set-back barrel and lathe cut ejector housing, set front sight at 12o'c, test fire for function, (shooting-sighting in is additional) $175.
Re-sight Colt or clone with correct silver soldered in place sight, includes blueing or plating work, R&R barrel test fire for function (shooting-sighting in is additional) $210.
Shorten barrel, machine crown, machine factory-type sight notch, install front sight (silver solder or pinned-S&W) R&R barrel and test fire for function (shooting-sighting in is additional) $210.
Tweak (slightly turn) barrel to adjust windage on Colts & clones (shooting-sighting in is additional) $65.
Cylinders: Hand polish and hone chambers, chamfer rear for easy loading/unloading. Left bright $60.
Rotational: Line-ream worn frame & bushing for new, oversized base pin. $75.
Rotational: Fit new standard base pin bushing. $45.
Rotational: Fit oversized base pin busing to worn cylinder. $75.
Revolver cylinder re-chambering, some examples:
Colt SAA .38-357 to .44 or .45 $210.
