Remington

Model 1887 Rolling Block Target Pistol. Chambered in .22 rf. This appears to be identical to the pistol shown in the center photo on page 151 of R. Ball's "Remington Firearms, the Golden Age of Collecting" and described as an 1887 model, with an 8" round barrel and those exact fixed sights, the frame is marked exactly as the gun in the picture, and with patent dates. Rear sight is a simple fixed blade, front sight is a modified Rocky Mountain sight. This beautiful pistol retains 95% or more original case colors, the barrel retains 98% original blue with light freckling. Under the grips the frame has the assembly number (or serial. . .does anyone really know?) 382 and this number is stamped on the inside of the grip. Under the barrel on forearm wood is stamped the #52. The wood fits perfectly and looks like a factory work, it retains almost all of the original finish which is turning slightly grainy and has some minor dings in the butt. About 900 produced 1887-1891. Now, the only flaw; someone has drilled or reamed the barrel from the rear, removing every trace of rifling except for about the last two inches, so the gun is nearly a smooth-bore. It almost looks as if a bullet was lodged in the bore and someone has the bright idea to drill it out. A skilled barrel maker could probably restore this bore by lining, consigned. For Remington collectors, this gun is a true prize and it would be priced much higher if not for the bore alteration. 23rd Edition Blue Book values a 90% 1887 at $2000., NRA Antique Exc SOLD
