Like high-quality casings of old: If you set your gaze on the area just behind the brass mortice lock, you will notice the thin piece of mahonagy "edging" that wraps around the inside perimeter of the casing. This is a "dust guard" that the fabric in the lid closes against to seal out much of the exterior atmosphere
